finished watching derek jarman's 'tempest' today--it was really really good. somehow he got this really strange effect (maybe by using blue filters?) of making a 3d landscape, like a cliff or ocean, look flat with a person moving over it/down the cliff. it's hard to describe but really interesting. it's funny, too, because the way he cut the script is really close to emphasizing the way i want to interpret the play. he ends with prospero's dream speech, which is really interesting to see how it works as an epilogue, compared to the way shakespeare's epilogue slants the meaning of the play.
like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
this is where the movie ended, with the silence and blank space of rolling credits. i have lots of fun stuff tonight--mainly dancing. i'm going to teach ross some of the stuff i've been making at 4, then at 5:30 we're watching 'esplanade' with dance forum (it sounds so nice to watch!) and then at 6:30 i'm going to take company class!!! maybe the halloween party tonight? (i'm thinking of making myself a dress out of packing paper). it feels good to be done with this week, although i actually have alot of work this weekend. but still, it's the weekend and the wind is blowing!
