day after christmas and all through the house not a creature is stirring not even a...well actually, there's my brother, who now looks like a british rockstar with longish hair, wavy at the ends, and beard, shut up in his old bedroom, me at this computer, and fat old sweet cat dizzy asleep on the big bed in my old room. oh and the tickytocky clock on the wall. the others have gone ahead to grandma's (aunt sassy and uncle glenn have been sleeping here this year) for breakfast, and i'll follow later.
the sky last night was rapturously open and bright, compared to the dull orange glare on the philly sky. each star in orion was piercing against the black, which seemed especially black because of a cloudy day that even included some hail unexpectedly clearing at some point in the evening. i took some pictures after the hail on the digital camera i've inherited so maybe those will come out.
shirley was looking very beautiful and fragile, smoothing her hands gently over a lavendar polar fleece blanket that she's been taking with her to keep warm when she rests. she was very happy that stephi had taken up sewing. she told us a story about one christmas when she sewed twelve sets of barbie clothes for the neighbors, who had ordered them after seeing the ones she had made for her own daughter. my mom reminded me of these wonderful cloth books my grandma sewed for my brother and i and my cousins when we were young, where each page has some fun thing you can do to it, like button and unbutton an "A," take a cloth ball out and put it away in a cloth box etc. earl and aunt dawn made some great pies--banana cream and pecan my favorites. and there were chocolates, potato salad, stuffing, turkey, cranberry sauce, squash, string beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, and the usual family, which we kept off the table after some discussion of cannibalism, nikki querying 'why don't we eat people?' and my dad responding with a story of people on some south asian island becoming demented from eating their relatives' thigh bones...now for peppermint hot chocolate...somebody just called lookin for an irene where there's no irene
